Jordan Ayew hat-trick sends Ghana top of Group I

Jordan Ayew

Jordan Ayew once again starred for the Black Stars on Monday night as Ghana secured a thrilling victory over the Central African Republic (CAR) in their fourth World Cup qualifier.

The Crystal Palace attacker, who scored the winning goal off the bench in the previous game against Mali, was handed a starting role as the West Africans faced the Wild Beasts at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Ghana took an early lead when Fatawu Issahaku, also starting due to his impressive performance against Mali, won a penalty in the sixth minute. Jordan Ayew confidently converted the spot-kick, setting the tone for a goal-filled match.

However, CAR quickly responded with Louis Mafouta scoring twice, in the 11th and 41st minutes, to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at halftime.

The Black Stars rallied in the second half, with Ayew equalizing on the hour mark by heading in a well-placed cross from Gideon Mensah. Just two minutes later, Issahaku put Ghana back in the lead with a fine strike. Ayew then secured his hat-trick and cemented Ghana’s victory by scoring from a rebound after Mohammed Kudus’ shot was blocked.

CAR managed to pull one back with a powerful strike from Mafouta, completing his own hat-trick, but Ghana held on for a 4-3 win.

This victory propels Ghana to the top of Group I with nine points, maintaining their dominance at the Baba Yara Stadium, where they have never lost a World Cup qualifier since 1972.
