Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has provided insight into his decision to join Arsenal, citing his desire to embrace the challenge of competing in the Premier League as a key factor.

Partey, who enjoyed a successful stint at Atletico Madrid in Spain, made a significant move to Arsenal in October 2020 for a reported fee of £45 million (€50 million).

Reflecting on his transition to the English club, the 30-year-old emphasised the shift in expectations and responsibilities that came with the transfer.

“Coming here was a big change because I had come from somewhere where I arrived as a youth player, so there was not that expectation on me at Atletico, and not the same responsibility. When I came to Arsenal, everybody saw the transfer fee, and I was coming to a club that has a lot of eyes on it,” he shared in an interview with Arsenal’s official website.

Having amassed 106 appearances for Arsenal, he played a pivotal role in the team’s resurgence, contributing to their return to the Champions League after a six-year absence.

Despite the challenges posed by adapting to a new league and playing style, Partey viewed the move as an opportunity for personal growth and development.

“One of the reasons I joined though was for that challenge. I know the Premier League is very tough, but I wanted to feel that challenge, to test myself, and feel capable of doing it,” he explained. “You have to stay positive, learn from everything that happens, and just control the things that you can.”

Currently navigating through injury setbacks, Partey remains determined to regain full fitness and make a significant impact for Arsenal, particularly as they aim to challenge for the Premier League title.

With Arsenal set to face defending champions Manchester City in a crucial title showdown this weekend, Partey is eager to play a pivotal role in his team’s pursuit of success on the domestic front.
