Ghanaian midfielder Michael Baidoo was on target for Elfsborg as he propelled them to a stunning 1-0 victory over the Italian giants, AS Roma in the UEFA Europa League.
Michael Baidoo who has been instrumental for the Swedish team right from the qualifying stage with three goals and three assists brought his scintillating qualifying form to the main stage as Elfsborg played their first Europa League group stage home match since 2013/2014 season.
The Borås Arena was electric as the Swedish side took on the seasoned European campaigners. Roma, boasting a star-studded lineup, was expected to dominate the proceedings. However, Elfsborg had other plans.
From the onset, the Swedish side demonstrated their determination to upset the odds. Michael Baidoo, Elfsborg’s Ghanaian forward, was a constant thorn in Roma’s side, using his pace and agility to trouble the Italian defense.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when Tommaso Baldanzi of A.S Roma handed the ball with his hand in his own box. The referee pointed to the spot after reviewing the action and Baidoo stepped up to take the penalty. With ice-cool composure, he slotted the ball past Roma’s goalkeeper, Mile Svilar.
Roma pushed hard for an equalizer in the second half, but Elfsborg’s defense held firm. The Swedish side’s goalkeeper, Isak Pettersson , produced several crucial saves to deny Roma’s attackers.
Michael Baidoo’s strike against Roma brings his tally to four goals in seven matches across all competitions and 5th goal in all European tournaments.
With their first Europa League win under their belt, Michael Baidoo and Elfsborg face another stiff test away to Galatasaray, who remain unbeaten in 7 matches, recording 5 wins and 2 draws.
