Germany name Euro 2024 provisional squad

Manuel Neuer and Toni Kroos have been named in Germany’s provisional Euro 2024 squad, potentially marking their fourth European Championships appearances.

Kroos, 34, initially retired from international duty in July 2021 but reversed the decision in March after discussions with head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Neuer, 38, returns to the squad after a hiatus since 2022 due to a leg injury sustained post-World Cup in Qatar.

Notable absentees include Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry, as well as Tottenham’s Timo Werner due to a hamstring injury.

Despite key contributions in Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League run, Mats Hummels and Julian Brandt are excluded from the 27-man squad, which will be trimmed to 26 post-friendly matches against Ukraine and Greece in June.

Former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, Arsenal’s Kai Havertz, and Brighton’s Pascal Gross are among those selected.

Germany, aiming to improve upon recent tournament performances, commence their campaign against Scotland on June 14 in Munich.
