Germany secured the bronze medal in Olympic women’s football at Paris 2024 with a narrow 1-0 victory over world champions Spain on Friday afternoon.

Spain had their best opportunity in a quiet first half when Aitana Bonmati struck the woodwork just before the break.

Giulia Gwinn netted the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 65th minute after being fouled by Spain’s goalkeeper Cata Coll. The match saw late drama as Spain was awarded a penalty seven seconds before the final whistle, but Alexia Putellas’ attempt was thwarted by a superb save from German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

Despite dominating possession in the latter stages and creating several chances, Spain could not find the equalizer to force extra time.

This victory marks Germany’s fourth bronze medal in Olympic women’s football, having previously secured the accolade in 2000, 2004, and 2008. Spain, who were making their Olympic debut, was left to rue missed opportunities.

The gold medal match between Brazil and the United States is scheduled for Saturday at Parc des Princes.
