Club Licensing delivers verdict on GPL venues ahead of resumption

The Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Club Licensing Department has completed its assessment of venues ahead of the Ghana Premier League’s resumption on March 7.

In line with the GFA Stadium Directives and the Enhanced Safety and Security Protocols 2025, a re-inspection of 15 GPL match venues was conducted from February 25 to February 27, 2025. This inspection focused on technical and security aspects, ensuring all venues met the minimum requirements for Category 3 matches. Key areas assessed included:

As part of the roadmap for the league’s resumption, the inspection was carried out in accordance with the GFA Stadium Directives and the Infrastructure Criteria outlined in the Enhanced Safety and Security Protocols 2025. The assessment focused solely on the technical and security aspects of the venues, ensuring they met the minimum standards required for Category 3 matches. Key areas of evaluation included the condition of the playing field, presence of inner perimeter fencing or barrier systems, minimum seating capacity, quality of dressing rooms, availability of a designated Safe Zone Area, external walling, and secure entry and exit points.

Inspection results:

Approved Venues – Five venues were fully cleared for use:

  • TNA Stadium
  • Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex
  • Dun’s Park (Bibiani)
  • Nsekyire Sports Arena
  • Kpando Sports Stadium
  • Venues with Security Concerns – The University of Ghana Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Sports Stadium were flagged due to security issues. Clubs using these venues must provide concrete solutions before their next home matches. A follow-up inspection will be conducted to verify compliance
  • Unapproved Venues – Wenchi Sports Stadium, AAK II Ampain, and Golden City Park were deemed unsuitable due to both technical and security deficiencies. These venues require significant renovations before reconsideration.
  • Affected clubs must act swiftly to address the highlighted issues to avoid disruptions. The GFA remains firm on enforcing safety and infrastructure standards to ensure a secure and smooth continuation of the league.
