Black Starlets suffer disappointing defeat to Nigeria

Ghana’s Black Starlets suffered a disappointing defeat against Nigeria on Tuesday afternoon, settling for a fourth-place finish in the 2024 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship.

Despite starting the tournament strongly and being considered favourites for the title, the Black Starlets fell short, succumbing to a 3-2 loss at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon, thereby missing out on the bronze medal.

The absence of head coach Laryea Kingston, who resigned following Saturday’s defeat to Burkina Faso, posed a significant challenge for the team.

Assistant coaches Nana Agyemang and Jacob Nettey were tasked with leading the team in their quest for the bronze medal. However, Nigeria proved too formidable, clinching victory over the Black Starlets.

The first half was closely contested, with both teams entering halftime deadlocked at 2-2. Nigeria took an early lead through Imrana Muhammed’s rebound in the ninth minute.

However, Ghana swiftly responded, with Herve Garfa restoring parity shortly after and then giving Ghana the lead in the 28th minute with a brilliant flick from a right-hand cross.

Despite their efforts, Ghana couldn’t maintain their advantage, conceding an equaliser just before halftime from Abdulmuiz Adeleke’s powerful header.

Nigeria sealed the victory in added time with Adeleke netting his second goal, securing the win for the Golden Eaglets.
