Ghana’s Black Queens recorded a 1-0 win over Senegal in a friendly game on Saturday, with Evelyn Badu netting the only goal of the game.
Badu ran onto a pin point delivery before glancing her header straight down Senegal’s net.
The Black Queens picked apart Senegal with incisive passes all game.
The team’s momentum got the better of Senegal, who are set to play Ghana again on Tuesday as part of a nine-day training tour ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament (WAFCON) – scheduled to take place in the summer.
After a dour display against Morocco in February – a result that led to Ghana’s first loss under new manager Kim Lars Bjorkegren- the Black Queens set out to prove a point, winning their duels and asserting their superiority.
Badu’s 24th minute strike came after the team had previously created openings in-and-around Senegal’s box.
Badu, however, made no mistake as she towered her headed effort down Senegal’s goalkeeper’s throat to put Ghana in the lead.
The team held off Senegal’s attempt to get back into the game in the first half, but handed the hosts a route back when Anasthesia Achiaa was sent off for a mistimed lunge in the second half with quarter of the game to go.
A resolute defensive performance saw Ghana smother all incursions by Senegal to record a first win under Swede coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren and a first victory since December 2023, when they beat Namibia 3-1.
The Black Queens, at the 7th time of asking, have secured a crucial win before their next game against Senegal.
