Berekum Chelsea defender Ahmed Adams has expressed concern over the poor attendance witnessed at Ghana Premier League (GPL) venues during the 2023/2024 season.
The vast expanses of empty seats within the stadiums paint a stark contrast to the vibrant atmosphere one would expect from Ghana’s premier football competition. Only a smattering of dedicated fans dot the stands.
According to the former Asante Kotoko SC defender, the current economic hardships plaguing the nation are the primary reason for the low patronage.
“The game is improving, and everything is moving on well. Only a few points separate one club from another on the table, making the league highly competitive,” he remarked on GPL Xpress.
“However, the attendance at the stadium is a problem due to the economic challenges. With everything being costly lately, people are unable to attend matches. This is undermining the Ghana Premier League.”
Adams further lamented the league’s inability to secure sponsorship, which has compounded the difficulties faced by clubs and players. “The league cannot boast of sponsorship, so it has become difficult for us (clubs and players),” he added.
