State of the Baba Yara Stadium pitch a few weeks before the Ghana’s clash with Angola

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium has been closed for renovation following widespread criticism after Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.

The poor condition of the pitch has dominated headlines, prompting the National Sports Authority (NSA), which manages the facility, to shut it down for necessary improvements.

The NSA aims to fully renovate the stadium in time for Ghana’s next international fixture in October when the Black Stars will face Sudan.

Despite the facility being temporarily approved by CAF for the Angola match, the continental football governing body has warned that if improvements are not made, Ghana’s future home matches could be moved to another country.

Both Ghana coach Otto Addo and Angola coach Pedro Gonçalves expressed their disappointment with the pitch. Gonçalves remarked, “A country like Ghana deserves a better pitch,” highlighting the challenges faced during the match.

As a result of the stadium closure, Asante Kotoko will need to find an alternative venue for their Ghana Premier League home matches.
