One of the rising stars to emerge in Ghanaian football over the past few years is Antoine Semenyo.

His journey to the top began with Bristol City’s U23 team in England, where he caught the attention of many with his lethal striking abilities.

After scoring five goals in six appearances for the youth team, Semenyo embarked on loan spells at Newport and Sunderland to gain valuable experience and playing time, before returning to Bristol City’s first team.

Semenyo’s breakthrough season came in 2021/22, coincidentally a FIFA World Cup year. He registered an impressive 20 goal contributions (eight goals and 12 assists), establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with.

His move to Bournemouth in the 2022/23 campaign marked a pivotal turning point, as he earned the chance to compete in one of Europe’s most prestigious leagues, the English Premier League.

However, Semenyo’s debut season in the top flight proved challenging, as he managed to find the back of the net just once in 11 appearances following his Winter transfer from Bristol City in the Championship, under the guidance of then-manager Gary O’Neil.

The turning point

This season, Semenyo has been in scintillating form. He has already netted eight goals in the Premier League, equaling his best-ever scoring record in a league season (2021/22).

His contributions extend beyond just goals in the league. With two assists to his name, he has now reached double figures (10) in terms of goal involvement in the Premier League after 29 matches played.

Semenyo has now surpassed Mohammed Kudus (7) as the Ghanaian with the most Premier League goals this season, and with four matchdays remaining, he’s on the cusp of reaching double figures for goals in his first full season in England’s top flight.

Bournemouth’s crucial 1-0 victory over Wolves at Molineux on Wednesday night showcased Semenyo’s impressive form, as he has proved to be a vital asset for the Cherries, who now occupy the upper half of the table in 10th place, just two points behind Chelsea (9th) in the league standings.

With a goal ratio of 0.34 per game in the league, Semenyo still has work to do to reach a world-class level.

However, his commitment and dedication to the game are now more evident than ever, and although there’s room for improvement, his form has been a delight for many Bournemouth fans and Ghanaians across the football world.
