Former Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor has emphasised the need for patience in supporting newly appointed Ghana national football team coach, Otto Addo.

The Borussia Dortmund trainer was appointed to replace veteran manager Chris Hughton as Ghana aim to restore its glorious moments.

Acknowledging the team’s challenges following a disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Akonnor urged Ghanaians to remain patient as Addo takes charge.

In an interview with Akoma FM, Akonnor highlighted the importance of allowing Addo sufficient time to execute his plans effectively.

He stressed that Addo would need time to implement his strategies and impart his knowledge to the team, calling for patience and understanding from the nation.

“A coach has been assigned for a couple of years, which means he will have a good plan to follow,” Akonnor stated. “We should be patient while the coach imparts his knowledge on the team and then excels.”

With Addo already leading the Black Stars in two matches since assuming his role, Akonnor expressed confidence in Addo’s ability to lead the team to success. He emphasised the significance of starting afresh and ensuring a smooth transition under Addo’s leadership.

“We need to start over, making sure everything goes well,” he said. “I believe Otto Addo can lead the team to success.”

In the previous two games which Otto Addo handles, the Black Stars lost 2-1 to archrivals Nigeria before playing a thrilling 2-2 draw against Uganda.

The team will therefore aim to play above themselves in their next assignment as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana will trade tackles with the Eagles of Mali as well as the Central African Republic as they aim to bounce back from their defeat to Comoros in November during their second qualifier.
