Nigeria took a significant stride toward securing a spot in the knockout stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), clinching a pivotal 1-0 victory over hosts Ivory Coast in Group A.

Displaying unwavering determination following their 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in their opening match, the Super Eagles secured the crucial win through a standout moment in the 55th minute. Ousmane Diomande’s foul on Victor Osimhen in the box led to a penalty, skillfully converted by William Troost-Ekong.

Despite the fervent support of a boisterous home crowd, Ivory Coast struggled to break through the formidable defence of the Super Eagles, who held their ground to maintain the slim lead.

This triumph propels Nigeria to the second spot in Group A, trailing behind Equatorial Guinea, who claimed a 4-2 victory over Guinea-Bissau earlier in the day.
