AFCON 2023: Nigeria advance to final after penalty shootout win over South Africa

In a thrilling semi-final clash at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Nigeria secured a spot in the final by overcoming South Africa in a dramatic penalty shootout.
The match featured intense moments, controversies, and a late equalising penalty, making it a spectacle for football fans.
The opening goal came for Nigeria when Mothobi Mvala’s over-the-top tackle on Victor Osimhen led to a penalty. William Troost-Ekong calmly converted, giving Nigeria the lead.
However, the game took a dramatic turn when Osimhen’s apparent second goal was ruled out by VAR. The decision, however, resulted in a foul in Nigeria’s box, awarding South Africa a penalty.
Teboho Mokoena stepped up and confidently slotted the penalty into the bottom left corner, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 90th minute.
The intensity continued as Grant Kekana received a red card in the 11th minute of extra time, leaving South Africa with 10 players. With no further goals in extra time, the game proceeded to a penalty shootout.
The shootout saw both Mokoena and Makgopa miss for South Africa, while Nigeria capitalised on their chances. Despite Ola Aina missing for the Super Eagles, they emerged victorious with a 4-2 win on penalties.
With this triumph, Nigeria, a three-time AFCON champion, advance to the final and awaits the winner between Ivory Coast and DR Congo.
The pulsating encounter showcased the unpredictability and excitement that the tournament has brought to football enthusiasts.
