Football is played on the pitch by 11 players from two opposing teams, with the coach’s instructions playing a significant role in determining the outcome of games.

However, sometimes a coach’s bravery and tactical acumen can make all the difference.

That’s the story of Ivory Coast’s Emerse Fae, a 40-year-old former French youth international who switched his allegiance to Ivory Coast at the senior level.

Fae began his coaching career in France before taking over as head coach of Cote d’Ivoire’s U23 team in 2022. He was later appointed as assistant coach to Jean-Louis Gasset for Ivory Coast at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations. Despite a disappointing group stage performance, which saw the Elephants lose 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea, Fae stepped up to lead the team after Gasset’s dismissal.

As interim coach, Fae made bold decisions and showed great tactical awareness, leading the team to victory against Senegal in the Round of 16 and Mali in the quarterfinals.

His leadership has taken Ivory Coast to their first AFCON final since 2015, and Fae hopes to go one better than his previous appearance in the final as a player in 2006 when they lost to Egypt.

Fae’s commitment, passion, and desire have been evident throughout the tournament, and his impact extends beyond the results on the pitch.

His player selections, tactics, and bold calls have revitalized the Elephants’ campaign, making him a standout performer in the coaching ranks.

Regardless of the outcome of the final, Fae’s incredible journey has left a lasting impression on the tournament and his coaching career.

If Ivory Coast wins their third AFCON title on Sunday night, there’s a strong possibility that Fae will become the permanent head coach of the national team.
