Football only means anything, when it means everything. And on a continent where football doesn’t only bring people together but coexist with the identity and culture of the land: football means everything.

What started as a tournament to unify the people of Africa, several decades ago, has gone on to tell the story of Africa through a sporting lens. Once again, Africa will come together for the 34th time in Ivory Coast and as always, football will be intertwined with colour, culture, passion, surprises, heritage and history.

Why should you watch and pay close attention to AFCON 2023?

Culture

T big-name players trace their origins to nations that are rich in culture, each possessing a unique footballing identity

Of course, the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) will have elite players who are household names in Europe, competing for the AFCON trophy. Mohammed Salah of Egypt, Sadio Mane of Senegal, Victor Osimhen from Nigeria and Mohammed Kudus from Ghana but football isn’t always about the big names. These big-name players trace their origins to nations that are rich in culture, each possessing a unique footballing identity.

Egypt are lauded as the pioneers of civilization in Africa and in African football are head and shoulders above everyone else. They are the record holders of the AFCON with an unparalleled seven titles. They play a unique brand of football you would typically associate with teams from North Africa. On the domestic front, Al Ahly are regarded as one of the best teams on the continent.

Fellow northern African neighbours, Morocco, head into the 2023 AFCON on the back of a stellar and pretty much historic campaign at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Atlas Lions left a mark on the big stage as the first African nation to make it to the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup. Morocco have a blend of players who are of Spanish and French descent playing for the flag, relying on teamwork and cohesion.

History

From its inception in 1957, the AFCON has been a decorated competition, with many stories, goals, drama and shocks in the last few decades. And with another edition of the tournament on the horizon, another chapter in the history of this tournament will be etched into African folklore.

Big boys Ghana will be hoping to put an end to the 42-year wait for the elusive AFCON trophy. The four-time champions last lifted the title in 1982 and since then have gone through periods of heartbreak. The Lions of Teranga, Senegal, will be hoping to defend their title as African champions as Egypt did in the early 2000s. The hosts, Ivory Coast and many other nations big and small, will be gunning for the trophy as well

The Surprises

Comoros won the hearts of many and stole the show at the last edition of the AFCON. In their first-ever appearance, the small nation made a big statement in their surprise victory over Ghana en route to a quarter-final exit. As with most AFCON tournaments, dark horses rise. 2023 AFCON is expected to be no different. The race is on as all 24 teams battle for the ultimate prize.

The AFCON tournament will start on January 13, 2024 and conclude on February 11.
