Eddie Nketiah has received his first call-up to England’s senior national team following Ghana coach Chris Hughton’s recent revelation about discussions with the Arsenal forward.

Hughton in early August confirmed talks about Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi possibly switching allegiances to Ghana.

Nketiah, who has Ghanaian roots, was eligible to play for the Black Stars. However, his selection for England’s squad for the upcoming matches against Ukraine and Scotland in September indicates England’s intent to secure his commitment.

Having displayed impressive performances for Arsenal, Nketiah’s call-up by England is seen as a proactive step to solidify his association with the English national team. Chris Hughton’s earlier comments seem to have spurred England into action.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the former Premier League boss said: “The issue is, and it is understandable, particularly for someone like myself who was born here.

“I have an Irish mother, a Ghanaian father and chose to play for Ireland at that particular time.

“These are two players that have represented England at quite a few of the underage teams.

“So some of it is understandable. We have been in contact with them.

“Not just in my time, I think from before as well. It is a process.

“But ultimately it will be about both of them making that decision that they want to play but we have had good dialogue with them.”

Nketiah has made a strong start to the season with Arsenal, scoring two goals in three Premier League games.
