Commonwealth Games: Deborah Acquah wins Ghana’s first ever medal in long jump, boxer Abraham Mensah takes silver

Deborah Acquah won Ghana’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s long jump after finishing third on Sunday evening.

Acquah, who arrived late in the United Kingdom due to visa issues, took bronze with a leap of 6.94m in the final, trailing only Australia’s Brooke Buschkuehl (silver) and Nigeria’s Ese Brume, who won gold with a leap of 6.99m.

Acquah arrived only 48 hours before her debut. She impressively advanced to the final, where she made history.

The 26-year-old missed the final of the women’s long jump event at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon in July, but she wasn’t going to be denied in Birmingham.

Earlier, boxer Abraham Mensah took silver in the Bantamweight division. The 19-year-old was defeated in the final by Northern Ireland’s Dylan James Eagleson, who won 5-0.

He is the second Ghanaian to win a silver medal, following fellow boxer Joseph Commey in the featherweight division.

Meanwhile, the women’s 4x100m relay team came seventh in their final.

Team Ghana have won five medals at the Games.
