Chelsea kept their EFL Cup dreams alive with a late comeback against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues fought back from a goal down to win the tie 5-4 in a penalty shootout, after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

Newcastle took the lead in the 16th minute through Callum Wilson. He appeared to have lost the ball on the edge of the area but a poor touch from Benoit Badiashile gifted Wilson the chance to curl a shot past Dorde Petrovic with the outside of his foot.

Chelsea dominated possession throughout the game but struggled to create clear-cut chances. However, they hit the bar early on through Connor Gallagher, and Bruno Guimaraes cleared a Raheem Sterling shot off the line.

Christopher Nkunku made his debut for Chelsea as a substitute in the second half, but the Blues struggled in front of goal. That was until Mikhailo Mudryk stepped up in injury time and scored a dramatic equaliser to send the game to penalties.

Kieran Trippier put his effort wide in the shootout, and Dorde Petrovic saved Matt Ritchie’s kick to put Chelsea through to the semi-finals. They join Middlesbrough and Fulham in the last four, with the fourth semi-finalist to be decided tomorrow when Liverpool take on West Ham United.
