Champions Cameroon off to flying start

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon began a defense of their Africa Cup of Nations trophy at the Ismailia Stadium in Egypt with a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau. Two quick second half goals from Banana Yaya and Stephane Bahoken saw the Lions extend their opening match wins in the history of the tournament to seven. They dominated play in both halves though the Djurtus came close to scoring on a few occasions. Clarence Seedorf’s side, least to say, spurned numerous chances that came its way. 2017 Cup of Nations Best Player Christian Bassogog, Karl Toko and Zambo Anguissa all missed gaping chances to score in the first half. The Guinean goalkeeper, Jonas Mendes, was forced into spectacular saves, coming to the rescue of his side in the 35th minute, when he prevented Toko’s header from going past him, and in the 50th minute, when he denied Yaya from scoring. However, the African Wild Dogs conceded a 66th minute corner kick, which resulted in the first goal of the day. Greece-based Yaya rose above his marker to head the ball home from the kick. After just three minutes, a cross into the penalty area saw the Guinean defenders in sixes and sevens as Bahoken took advantage to slot the ball home. The game ended 2-0 in favour of the five-time champions. They will play Ghana on Saturday in their next game while Guinea-Bissau face Benin that same day.
