Santos FC, one of Brazil’s most successful and historic clubs, have been relegated to the country’s second division for the first time in their 111-year history following a dismal season.

Santos, who have produced some of the biggest names in football including Pelé, Neymar, and Robinho, finished 17th in the 20-team Brasileirão table with just 43 points.

The club’s relegation was confirmed on Wednesday evening when they lost 2-1 at home to Fortaleza, a result that left them unable to escape the relegation zone. Despite a late surge in form, Santos failed to win any of their last five matches, ultimately sealing their fate.

Founded in 1912, Santos have enjoyed a rich history in Brazilian football, winning multiple state and national titles, as well as two Copa Libertadores crowns in 1962 and 1963.

However, this year’s relegation marks a new low point for the club, which has struggled to maintain its once-lofty standards in recent seasons.

The club’s decline has been felt particularly keenly by their loyal fan base, who have grown accustomed to seeing their team compete at the highest levels of domestic and international football.
