President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo has offered to donate a sum of GHC1 million to Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC as they gear up for their first CAF Champions League campaign.

The Tarkwa-based team visited the president on Wednesday and presented to him the Ghana Premier League trophy ahead of their first Champions League game, which is slated for later this month.

George Mireku Duker, Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Mines and Natural Resources, accompanied the champions as they arrived at the Jubilee House. Chiefs from the Apinto Traditional Council, Dr. Tony Aubynn, the club’s board chairman, head coach Evans Augustine Adotey, and members of the management and technical teams were also present.

After holding talks with the president, he made a promise to the Yellow and Mauves indicating his willingness to provide the amount while stating the likelihood of his attendance when the team face Remo Stars of Nigeria in their first game at the Cape Coast stadium on August 18.

“I will try to provide a million Ghana Cedis to help you in the CAF campaign,” he told the club.

“The deputy minister is insisting that if I’m in Ghana on the 20th, I should come to Cape Coast. I’ll see.

“We’ll do our best.”

Medeama became champions of Ghana after leapfrogging Aduana Stars in the latter stages of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season and gained the right to represent the nation in the renowned Continental championship.

“Congratulations to you, the captain, and the members of the team for this historic achievement,” Akufo-Addo added.

“It’s been 47 years since a team from the Western Region won the cup. This is great. You’ve done a great job. Congratulations.”

After the first leg, Medeama will travel to Nigeria for the second leg on August 25.

The winner of the tie will proceed to face Guinean giants Horoya with a group stage spot up for grabs.

The last time Medeama participated in CAF inter-club competitions was in 2016 when they beat South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns to make it to the Group stages.
