Mauritania made history by securing their first-ever victory in the Africa Cup of Nations, defeating one of the tournament’s most successful teams, Algeria. This remarkable achievement also marked the first time Mauritania has advanced to the knockout stages of the competition.

Mohamed Dellahi scored in the 37th minute, giving Mauritania a lead they would not relinquish. As the clock ticked down, tensions rose, and the crowd erupted in joy when the final whistle blew, signalling Mauritania’s historic triumph.

The win was especially impressive given that Algeria, who were crowned champions in 2019, had been considered a favourite to advance from Group D. However, despite a slow start, Mauritania gained confidence as the game progressed, with Dellahi’s goal being the turning point.

In an effort to turn the tide, Algeria coach Djamel Belmadji made key substitutions at the start of the second half, bringing on Riyad Mahrez and Nabil Bentaleb. While Algeria did create more opportunities, Mauritania remained resolute in defense and even came close to adding a second goal when Ibnou Ba hit the crossbar from close range.

With this momentous victory, Mauritania advances to face Cape Verde in the Round of 16, marking yet another milestone in their historic run at the Africa Cup of Nations.
