Accra most likely venue for Ghana-Sudan Afcon qualifier

Accra is likely to host it’s first competitive Black Stars match in three years after the Confederation of African Football ruled out Cape Coast as a venue for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan.

Inspectors from the CAF were in Accra over the weekend to gauge the quality of both the Accra and Cape Coast Stadiums and are now heavily tilting towards the stadium in the capital, strong sources have told Akoma Sports.

While there is still some outstanding work at the Accra Sports Stadium mainly on the quality of public washrooms and dressing room washrooms, it meets many of CAF’s key requirements for hosting a category three match after weeks of work on the facility.

An approval will mean Ghana will host Sudan at the stadium famous for many big Black Stars days when they face Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan on Friday 11th October 2024.

The last competitive Black Stars game at the venue took place three years ago against Sao Tome and Principe. Since then, Cape Coast and Kumasi have hosted key senior Ghana games.

The Baba Yara Stadium was stripped of its hosting rights after CAF said it didn’t match up to international standards.

The body then demanded Ghana pick a venue outside Ghana.

With a reprieve likely, Ghana now seems to have avoided the shame of playing its home matches away from home.
