Spio-Garbrah dismisses Mahama running mate claims

A flagbearer hopeful for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, says he never stated that he would be the running mate for former president John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise morning show, Dr. Spio-Garbrah said he has always wanted to go for the ultimate and that there was no way he would have wanted to be a running mate.

“I never said it, never will, why will I say that? The job available isn’t running mate to anybody. If the job and vacancy available is Managing Director of a bank, and you apply for Deputy Managing Director, they will throw your CV away.”

The former Trades and Industry Minister said he has gone for the flagbearer slot before, and he saw it to the end and he plans on doing the same again this time.

He added that those who have nothing negative to say about him are the ones saying he is going to be Mahama’s running mate.

“I have applied for this job before, and run all the way to the end. I’m applying for the job now and will run all the way to the end, but those who have nothing to say against me and would like to weaken my candidacy in the eyes of my potential supporters will then come and say well doesn’t want to be flagbearer but he is seeking to be somebody’s running mate.”

He continued: “Nobody has won the flagbearership for them to negotiate with me to be running mate which is what our constitution NDC calls for.”

When asked if he will be the running mate if he loses, he said there is no way he will lose, and that his main objective for contesting is to emerge as winner, and subsequently lead the NDC to victory in 2020.

Dr. Spio-Garbrah went on to state that, among all the candidates vying for the position, none of them has the practical knowledge he has although they also have their various experiences.

He added that there is a need for the NDC to re-energize the grassroots, and that he is happy about the number of people that contested during the branch and constituency executive positions.
