Volta River Authority prepares for another Akosombo Dam spillage

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has indicated the possibility of a spillage of water from the Akosombo Dam, although an exact date has not yet been announced.

In a statement by Ing. Ken Arthur, Deputy Chief Executive in Charge of Services, the VRA emphasized the importance of engaging with stakeholders to ensure the structural integrity of the dam and the safety of surrounding communities.

According to the statement, plans are underway to involve approximately 40 relevant stakeholders, including the Minister for the Interior and all assemblies within the dam’s catchment areas.

Discussions will focus on potential implications, mitigative measures, and effective dissemination of information to residents.

The VRA’s precautionary measures follow a previous incident in September 2023 when excess water released from the Akosombo Hydro Dam led to flooding and significant damage to about 39,000 homes in the lower Volta basin.

This recent announcement has sparked concern among residents, particularly in Mepe, North Tongu District, who were affected by the previous spillage. Many residents claim they have not been adequately engaged or informed about the current situation.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, highlighted that hundreds of victims from the previous incident are still awaiting full compensation from the government, nearly 10 months after the initial spillage.

As the VRA continues to plan for potential spillage, stakeholders and affected communities are urged to stay informed and participate actively in discussions aimed at safeguarding lives and properties in the region.
