As I started an early morning adventure to the Tema Railway Station, little did I know that I was in for an unforgettable experience. The idea had sprung from a tweet I stumbled upon, promising a train ride through the scenic vantage points of Accra. With my curiosity piqued, I decided to seize this opportunity.

Ghana’s railway history stretches back to the colonial era when the British introduced railways as a means to transport goods and people within the Gold Coast colony. The initial line, connecting Sekondi to Kumasi, facilitated the movement of cocoa, timber, and other resources to the coast for export. Over time, the railway network expanded, linking major towns and cities like Takoradi, Accra, and Tema.

However, the railways faced challenges, including maintenance issues, underinvestment, and competition from road transport, leading to a decline in efficiency. In recent years, Ghana has made ambitious efforts to revive and modernize its railway network, with various projects aimed at connecting cities, industrial zones, and ports, promising a brighter future for rail transportation in the country. In 2019, the government signed a $3.2 billion railway project deal with the Thelo DB consortium.

My journey began at 5 a.m., as I hopped into an Uber in Osu. The excitement bubbling within me was palpable, knowing that I was about to explore Accra in a way I had never done before.

By 5:50 AM, I had arrived at the Tema Rail Station, ready to begin a new adventure.
At the station, I was presented with an interesting choice: regular class tickets for 5 cedis or first-class tickets for 7 cedis. Eager to explore all aspects of this adventure, I decided to experience both. The distinction was immediately noticeable as I stepped into the first-class compartment. The plush leather seats and the spacious arrangement, complete with convenient storage spaces, were an enticing invitation. I opted for the first-class tickets, eager to enjoy the journey in style.

As the clock ticked closer to 6:15 AM, the soothing hum of electric fans signaled our departure. Right on time, the train began to roll, and so did our adventure.

Throughout the journey, the train made strategic stops to pick up passengers, with some highlighting their chosen destinations. What caught my attention was the wise choice of some commuters who had decided to leave their cars behind and embrace the train’s affordability. It was a chance to escape the morning traffic, and they had seized it.

But it wasn’t just the convenience that made this journey remarkable; it was the breathtaking views. As the train chugged along, we were treated to scenes that showcased Accra’s unique charm. The glistening sea, the bustling harbour, and the city’s roads passed by like a moving postcard. Our route took us through Tema, Sakumono, Spintex, Bachona, Airport, Dzorwulu, Achimota, Alajo, Circle, and, finally, our last stop, Accra.

My watch read 7:35 AM when I alighted at the Accra station. In just 40 minutes, I had traversed the distance from Tema to Accra, all while relishing the sights and sounds of the city. It was an experience like no other, a unique and traffic-free perspective of Accra that I would recommend to anyone.

As I reflect on this journey through the heart of Accra, one thing is certain: it was an adventure that left a lasting impression. So, whether you’re a local or a visitor, consider hopping on the train for a delightful journey through the heart of Accra. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Stay tuned for more of these exciting adventures as I continue to uncover the hidden gems of Accra, one day at a time.
