Ghanaian gospel sensation, Diana Hamilton, has opened up about the transformative journey of her music-making process and how it boosted her confidence in mixing languages.

In an interview with Johnnie Hughes on 3FM, the award-winning singer shared how her song “Work in Progress” played a pivotal role in breaking down language barriers within her music

Recalling the early stages of her career, Diana revealed that her manager once advised her to stick to singing exclusively in either English or her local dialect, Twi. However, destiny had other plans in store for her artistic expression.

When she received the inspiration for “Work in Progress,” the lyrics flowed in English, challenging her initial dilemma of choosing a language.

Seeking guidance and encouragement, Diana consulted with her colleague, Kwame Yeboah, who served as a source of inspiration and motivation.

“But I think my confidence in mixing it up actually started with Work in Progress. I was working with this guy called Kwame Yeboah and I was writing this song and I was like; This is the message I have ‘Because I’m a work in progress’ and I was like how do I put chords to this because I don’t play,” she narrated.

He reassured her that she didn’t necessarily need to add chords to the song, but rather just let the message speak for itself.

“So, I spoke to Kwame Yeboah and he was like you’ don’t have to put chords to it, Just say it’ and then also I was like ‘But it’s in English’ and he’s blunt like that he was like ‘so’ I’m like ‘will it work’ he was like ‘try’ and then it came in,” she disclosed.

Prior to “Work in Progress,” Diana admitted feeling somewhat insecure about blending languages in her music.

However, the positive reception and genuine connection that her song received shattered those doubts.

As a result, Diana Hamilton’s confidence in mixing languages has grown exponentially, and she now seamlessly weaves together English and Twi in her songs.
