The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has announced that it will open a Book of Condolence on Monday, August 26, 2024, in memory of Godwin Avenorgbo, the Chairman of its 75th Anniversary Planning Committee, who passed last Monday.
The Book of Condolence will be opened at the Ghana International Press Centre on the Gamel Abdul-Nasser Avenue, from 8am to 5pm, for 10 days.
This is contained in a press release dated August 21 and signed by the General Secretary, Mr Kofi Yeboah.
“Mr Avenorgbo, popularly known as ‘The Grandmaster’, was rushed to hospital from home after a sudden illness but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The death of ‘Big G’ came as a big shock to the GJA and the entire media fraternity in Ghana, and there has been an outpouring of tributes in his memory”, the press release stated.
It said, “The National Executive of the GJA, led by the Vice President, Mrs Linda Asante Agyei, visited the residence of the late renowned broadcaster at the Regimanuel Estates near Accra, on Tuesday, to commiserate with the family.
The National Executive expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for God’s strength for them in these difficult moments. They discussed ways of collaboration to give a befitting burial to the former Director of Radio at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).”
Mr Avenorgbo had led the planning and execution of activities to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the GJA, serving with dedication, passion and dynamism.
At a commemorative lecture on the birthday of the GJA at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel last Thursday, he took the microphone and spoke heartily as he always loved to do; later, he took to the floor and danced his heart out.
Apart from serving as the Chairman of the GJA 75th Anniversary Planning Committee, Mr Avenorgbo also readily availed himself to the service of the GJA in many other capacities and for many decades.
“His sudden death is a huge loss to the GJA and the nation as a whole, and we are yet to come to terms with that reality; indeed, we are still shocked!” the press release concluded.
