It’s disrespectful to mock my political journey based on my acting background – Dumelo

Ghanaian actor and MP elect for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo has responded to critics who downplay his capabilities as a politician because of his entertainment background.
John Dumelo who has successfully switched from acting to politics revealed that initially some people did not like the idea of him pursuing a political career because of his background as an entertainment person.
In an interview on Hitz FM, December 11, John Dumelo explained that it is disrespectful for persons to mock his political career and stigmatise him because of his showbiz background.
He referenced a number of MPs in Parliament with diverse professional backgrounds including law, medicine, and business, serve as Members of Parliament.
“I see it as a little bit disrespectful because you have lawyers, you have doctors, you have businessmen in Parliament,” he said.
John Dumelo emphasised being a law maker is about effectively representing one’s constituents, irrespective of prior career paths.
“We even had hairdressers in parliament,” he added.
He noted that politicians come to entertainers for endorsement during political campaigns because they know how influential entertainers can be.
“And so, for me, that stigma is just one of those things that I just when people say it, I just laugh about it.
But all in all, it’s for us to represent the people well,” he further noted.
John Dumelo won the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat on his third contest with 47,560 votes beating incumbent MP, Lydia Seyram Alhassan who polled 39,214 votes.
