It took the doctors 40 hours to remove my breast – Stephanie Benson opens up about her surgery

UK-based Ghanaian international jazz singer and performer, Stephanie Benson has spoken up about the details of her mastectomy procedure.

Born Princess Akua Ohenewaa Asieanem of Kokobin, the singer was diagnosed with a severe form of breast cancer and had her breast and nipples removed.

The effervescent mother of five who has been vocal about her battle with the disease and her survival journey shared critical details of the surgery with Cookie Tee on the latest episode of Today’s Woman on TV3.

According to Benson, exercising played a significant part in being alive during and after the surgery.

“I’ve been through so much but I’ve not lost my smile. If it wasn’t for the fact that I exercise with the kind of surgery I had. if I didn’t have a strong heart, I’d have lost my life,” she explained.

The surgery which took 40 hours also saw her experiencing heart failure and other complications.

“My surgery took 40 hours and had three sessions. The first session took 13 hours and they gave me a two-hour break and I went in again for another nine hours and then it went wrong and I had to go in for another 13 hours all within two days,” she disclosed.

Stephanie Benson also had to remove her womb and receives hormonal injections on a regular to help her body behave normally which has left her with scars.

Her candid and eye-opening story has been met with a lot of praise and admiration from people online.

“If God says it’s not your time…no harm can befall you…you are a strong woman @stephaniebensonlive and you shall live long to see ur great great great grandchild??,” a user wrote
