Fast-rising Ghanaian musician, Chief One who sings in his native Ewe language says language will not be a barrier to his global dominance.
Chief One, who has gained popularity for songs such as Wotelewoea, Du Agbe and Toyota in local and international markets, has demonstrated that music truly is a universal language.
Currently in the Top 100 songs in the Chinese music charts, the Ziope and Keta native in a recent interview on TV3 New Day alluded to the quality of his music as the reason for his current global success.
“I play in Togo and other countries. Music is a language in itself and currently, my music, “Young Boy” is in the Top 100 China Charts,” he disclosed
Based on the available statistics, 6 million individuals within the Ghanaian population are speakers of the Ewe language, while in West Africa as a whole, the number of Ewe speakers is approximately 20 million.
Despite these numbers, making music in a language like Ewe can limit an artist because it is not widely spoken outside of Ghana.
However, this has not hindered the Wotelewoea crooner who still has a massive audience in the United States .
“Aside from Ghana, the country with my most streams is the United States of America,” the VGMA New Artiste of the Year nominee stated.
According to Chief One, he remains committed to his vision of creating music that represents his culture and language.
