River Densu bridge collapses at Amasaman, truck driver missing

A bridge connecting Ayikai Doblo and Ashalaja in the Amasaman municipality collapsed on Tuesday evening around 7:30 when a tipper truck loaded with sand attempted to cross it.

Residents say the “weak” bridge collapsed under the weight of the truck which is one of many other heavy duty vehicles that use the bridge on a daily basis.

The truck fell directly into the river flowing under the bridge and somersaulted several times. Due to the time of the accident very few people were at the seen and are unable to tell whether the driver managed to escape or was still trapped in the truck.

His assistant, or the drivers mate managed to escape. The high water level, completely submerged the truck few minutes after it fell into the water which has risen in the last few days due to the rains.

Officers of the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces rushed to the scene with their rescue boats and other equipment hours later but are yet to get the truck out of the river.

The District Chief Executives of both Amasaman and Ga South have visited the scene with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo.

Some residents tell tv3network.com, the Amasaman Municipal Assembly is now completely cut off from the Ga South District.
