Politicization of premix fuel leading to hardships – Fishers

Fishers say implementation of the 2022 closed fishing season is likely to be threatened.

They say the diversion and mismanagement of premix fuel distribution and politicization of its sale has led to increasing hardship.

Closed seasons are observed annually as part of efforts to reducing fishing pressure on stocks to allow the fishes to lay their eggs to replace the lost population due to fishing and other natural causes.

A statement signed and issued by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mrs Mavis Hawa Koomson on April 12, 2022, said this year’s season starts on July 1 to July 31, 2021 while industrial fishers are to observe the closed season from July 1 to August 31, 2022.

“It must be indicated that the period of the 2022 closed season was agreed on based on scientific evidence and stakeholder consensus,” she noted.
