Police deny Legon lecturer slap after CCTV evidence

Dr. Mensah is a marketing lecturer at the University of Ghana

The Ghana Police Service has dismissed reports that an officer stationed at the Kotoka International Airport slapped a lecturer of the University of Ghana last year during a misunderstanding.

Dr Kobby Mensah demanded disciplinary action against Wilson Oku, whom he accused of slapping him in an apparent show of power.

The incident happened on Sunday, September 17, 2017.

Dr Mensah, a Marketing lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, subsequently petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to have the officer and two others sanctioned.

But in a statement on Monday, the police say there was no evidence from CCTV footage that the lecturer was slapped.

The misunderstanding was, however, confirmed by the police for which statements from the lecturer and the officer were taken.

“We wish to clarify that there was no assault by the policeman on the lecturer at the Kotoka International Airport as reported in the media,” the statement said.

The matter was handled by the Criminal Investigations Department at the police headquarters.
