Political campaigns and road safety

#attachment_description

Dear friends in active politics,

The last 23 months have seen some marginal and consistent declines in our Road Traffic Crashes, Injuries and Deaths (CIDs) data. It is unprecedented and important we work together to sustain the positive gains.

However, available data from the last 30 years confirms a trend of increased CIDs in election years partly due to increased travels for campaigns and it’s associated risks.

The quality of our road network have seen some improvements prompting some drivers to embrace excessive speeds and other unsafe choices,

While you travel around to campaign for votes, spare a moment to reflect on the road transport system and how to make it better.

In the interim, observe the following:

1. Sign up your drivers for Refresher Training. They need to build their capacity and orientation for the unusual terrain ahead.

2. Develop a journey plan for the campaign and avoid hurriedly planned travels. They are considered high risk.

2. Ensure that your drivers take enough rest within the day and where possible, deploy two drivers for trips in excess of 8 hours or 500km.

4. Ensure daily inspection of your vehicles and a regular maintenance programme.

5. Advise the campaign office or team to appoint a Safety or Transport Officer to keep your travels safe.

I wish you all a successful campaign. Travel safely and #StayAlive
