Online Drivers Union to demonstrate over new DVLA fee

November 16, 2019

realityapp realityapp realityapp

The Online Drivers Union is set to embark on a demonstration to protest the introduction of a 60 cedis annual fee by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

This comes on the back of an announcement by the DVLA that all drivers who use ride-hailing platforms will begin to pay an annual fee of GH¢60.00.

The fee forms part of new guidelines the Authority has introduced together with the Ministry of Transport, National Road Safety Commission, the MTTD of the Ghana Police Service and other key stakeholders to check the activities of such digital operations.

In a statement, DVLA also indicated that special identifier stickers will be issued to vehicles that have completed the process and they “must be affixed on the windscreen at all times.”

But the Public Relations officer of the Online Drivers Union, Togbor Dziedzorm Wise said on 3FM Business Daily that they will embark on a demonstration if the DVLA does not withdraw the tariff.

“Our work is just full of taxes, and now the DVLA is introducing this? We don’t even know what this 60 cedis is for. If the DVLA does not give us audience any time soon, then we will call on all of our members for a demonstration by next week”, he cried.

He lamented the numerous deductions they suffer as a result of being on the driving platforms.

“We suffer too many deductions, and no one seems to care. Even in the midst of the increase in fuel process, Uber is still giving reductions and bonuses. You will work the whole day and get nothing in return,” he added.
