You have acted in bad faith – Afenyo-Markin to Appointments Committee Chair

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor of acting in “bad faith” by proceeding to vet Roads and Highways Minister-designate, Governs Kwame Agbodza without the presence of minority MPs.

On Monday, January 20, even before the vetting of the Roads Minister-designate could begin, MPs on the committee had various exchanges and disagreements on standing orders and other matters not in relation to the vetting of the Minister-designate.

Bernard Ahiafor, the Chair of the Committee then directed that the meeting be suspended for five minutes.

Subsequently, the vetting proceeded before the Minority MPs could resume from the break.

Afenyo-Markin then took offence and called out the Chairman of the Committee for proceeding the vetting without the presence of the Minority MPs.

“I told you that I am having a discussion with my caucus, we come and then the vetting had proceeded. We did not spend more than five minutes. I want to register this protest that you have proceeded in bad faith. It is not the understanding we had,” Afeno-Markin lamented.

However, Bernard Ahiafor took exception to the words of the Minority Leader and demanded that Afenyo-Markin apologised for use of words such as “rude” against the Committee chair before proceedings continue.

“We should be guided by the rules that in this House, we do not use indulging, disparaging language. I do not for see former majority leader, now minority leader to repeat the word rudely, such a conduct won’t be tolerated. I therefore urged upon him to retract the word rudely and apologised,” Ahiafor said.

Afenyo-Markin further withdrew his words against and apologised.

If as you sit to my right as a chair, you feel that the phrase is unacceptable, I think that it is acceptable that same is taken back and to express my concern to you that the rate at which I am being interrupted is unacceptable,” the Effutu MP apologised.
