'Sex for grades' pastor suspended

A church in Nigeria says it has ordered a pastor to step down from ministerial duties after a BBC Africa Eye investigation implicated him in a “sex for grades” scandal at a leading university.

Boniface Igbeneghu, a lecturer in French at the University of Lagos, was caught on video sexually harassing a 17-year-old undercover reporter.

“Let me just hug you. My baby. My baby. No wait. Don’t ask me what I want to do. I’m not going to harm you,” he said at one point.

Dr Igbeneghu was also a pastor at The Foursquare Gospel Church, which said in a statement that it does not condone “heinous and unscriptural” acts.

It has asked him to step down, pending the outcome of an investigation, the church’s national secretary Ikechukwu Ugbaja said in a statement.

Dr Igbeneghu has not yet commented on the allegations.
