Acting Director General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba has criticised the Minority MPs for storming the office of the Economic Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to demand the release and review of the bail condition for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Amaliba described the actions of the Minority MPs as “lawlessness”, questioning why they could not seek redress in court in a democratic state.
Speaking on TV3 New Day’s The Big Issue, Friday, May 30, 2025, Mr. Amaliba argued that the Minority’s action was inappropriate as state institutions like EOCO cannot be compelled to review decisions without legal action.
“The Minority’s conduct yesterday was lawlessness at its best. What happened yesterday was nothing more than lawlessness.
“You cannot scream on your voice and say that EOCO should vary the terms of the bail condition. If we were going to be doing that, then state institutions cannot work.
“Then if state institutions act and you are not happy, all you need to do is go to those state institutions, attack them and scream on your voice and then they will change their decision. You don’t do that in a democracy,” he stated.
He questioned why the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin who has on a number of occasions sought legal redress under the previous NPP administration could not do same in this situation.
“Ain’t you surprise that a man who could file a case in the morning and by 12 PM get the Supreme Court empaneled and decision is given to him, the same man is afraid to go to court. What has happened? This is a man who ordinarily run to court, why is it that on this occasion, this man is now screaming on his voice,” he quizzed.
Chairman Wontumi has remained in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) despite having been granted bail of GHC50 million with two sureties of which he is yet to fulfil the sureties.
In protest of what the Minority has described as the ‘unfair’ bail terms, the Minority staged a walkout in Parliament and later organized a sit-down protest at EOCO’s headquarters on Thursday, May 29, 2025, accusing the investigative body of unfair treatment and political bias.
According to the Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem Sai, Chairman Wontumi has been arrested on allegations of fraud, money laundering, and involvement in organised crime.
