Chairman of the New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, who turned himself in to the Police after he was declared wanted, has been charged with assaulting public officer, and will be arraigned Wednesday.

The firebrand party executive was arrested Tuesday morning when he voluntarily presented himself to the Police after he was declared wanted for allegedly assaulting Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Amankwah, and the Constituency Secretary, Felix Ibrahim on Sunday.

Mr. Boasiako popularly referred to as Chairman Wontumi, has been refused bail by the Police; a decision that has since caused supporters of the NPP to mass up at the Central Police Station in Kumasi where the chairman is being held.

The supporters led by some party executives and leading members including Maxwell Kofi Jumah have vowed to remain at the Police station until their chairman is released on bail, TV3 Correspondents have reported.

There is currently high security presence, including military men, at the Central Police Station to maintain peace and order.

Police sources told TV3 that Mr Wontumi would remain in custody until Wednesday when the Police would finish its processes and arraign him on the charge of assaulting public officer under Section 205 of the Criminal Offences Act.

Mr Boasiako on Sunday at Krofom in Kumasi, allegedly assaulted two members of his party following a misunderstanding between them during the on-going limited voters registration exercise.

The two subsequently lodged a complaint with the Police who then invited Mr. Boasiako but the Police said on Monday he “refused to honour the invitation” hence an order was issued for his arrest to assist in investigation.

But before he could be arrested, Mr Boasiako on Tuesday reported to the Police who arrested him and placed him in custody after a caution statement was taken from him.
