Witness in NDC Chairman trial denies own statement

It was dramatic on Wednesday at the Accra High Court where the trial of the National Chairman of the opposition NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, and Deputy Communication Officer Kweku Boahen is being heard. A broadcast journalist with Adom FM, Benjamin Osei Ampofo Adjei, denied his own witness statement despite acknowledging his signature to it when he appeared to testify against the two accused. Prosecution then decided to tender in the statement but the defense counsel objected, indicating that the rules say both parties had to agree before it is tendered in. After some back and forth, the court adopted the statement with Justice Samuel Asiedu ruling that as long as the witness agreed it is his signature the statement could not be rejected. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo and Kweku Boahen are standing trial over an alleged leaked tape, which finds a speaker inciting violence against the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa, and the Chairman of the National Peace Council (NPC), Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante. The two have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit assault against a public officer, while Ofosu-Ampofo has pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault against a public officer.
