Western Region Chairman of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Prince Yaw Kwakye, has explained that bitter lessons from the 2020 election prompted the party to join the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) “Enough is Enough” demonstration.
He claims that the party suffered significant but avoidable vote losses during the last general elections due to major discrepancies in the voter register.
“…In some areas, instead of 300 votes, we were given 3. Some of our members also had their names missing from the register. For others, it was an issue of wrongful transfer.”
To avoid a similar outcome in the upcoming elections, the Regional Chairman emphasized that “it was crucial for them to align with the calls for an independent audit of the voter register to ensure it is “credible” for the upcoming elections,” he told Connect News.
Among the crowd of demonstrators who flooded the streets of Sekondi-Takoradi, at the behest of the NDC, to protest the alleged “intransigent” stance of the Electoral Commission regarding what they describe as an “untrustworthy electoral roll” were members of the Ghana Union Movement.
In a pickup truck adorned with the image of their flagbearer, Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrews, and the party’s insignia, members repeatedly gestured the “We are changing” sign to onlookers.
Occasionally, a member would approach bystanders, seemingly to campaign.
“Make no mistake. Our presence here should not be seen as an endorsement of the NDC. Rather, it’s the issue at stake that we firmly support. In 2020, when we lost votes, we didn’t lose them to the NDC. It was an injustice to our members—a direct affront to our civic responsibility.”
He insisted, “We would have been out on the streets with any other party that championed a cause we believe would prevent disenfranchisement.”
“Our focus is clear.”
Prince Yaw Kwakye maintained that the prospects of the party, in Election 2024 are “brighter” than ever before.
“There’s no need to repeat how both the NDC and NPP have damaged this nation. Things would have been different if they had continued the legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Our flagbearer has filed, and we are ready and coming like never before…”
He urged Ghanaians to “consider” voting for a different party, like GUM, reminding them, “You cannot get a different outcome if you keep voting the same way.”
