President John Dramani Mahama, over the weekend, received and held a meeting with the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, led by Most Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi.
The President said the meeting was an opportunity for him to extend his congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on his election.
He also shared his hope that the new Pope will follow in the compassionate and impactful footsteps of Pope Francis, who held a special place in his heart for Africa.
“One of the reasons for their visit was to congratulate me on the victory in the December 7th elections. For me, it was an honour to receive the Bishops’ Conference because of their support, prayers, and the opportunity to discuss critical national issues as I had done before the elections,” President Mahama wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday, May 25.
He added, “We discussed the fight against galamsey, education reform, and governance and electoral reforms.”
He appreciated the Conference’s strong stance against the devastation being caused by illegal mining and their call for decisive action.
Mr Mahama said their suggestions for credible and sustainable alternatives are equally important for those involved and remain one of the effective strategies that the government has been committed to.
“I thank the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference for its dedication to the development and well-being of our country.
“As a government, we are committed to working together to address these challenges and build the Ghana we want,” he assured.
