Director of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor

The Ghana Police Service has said it will review footages which captured the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin in an altercation with a police officer during the Save The Judiciary demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The viral video captured the Minority leader hitting the police officer’s cap and engaged in a heated conversation with the officer.

The Effutu MP in a statement denied assaulting the officer, claiming he was rather hit in the chest by one Corporal Forson.

He has since petitioned the Inspector General of Police to investigate the said officer and initiate disciplinary action against him.

Speaking on the matter at a press briefing on May 6, 2025, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor indicated that their investigation team will assess all footages of the incident.

She noted that the police has written to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin for permission to bring in Afenyo-Markin for investigation into the incident.

According to DCOP Donkor, all police officers who were on duty at the scene have been identified and their statements taken to assist investigation.

“I believe that there are videos on social media about an altercation or confrontation that happened during the demonstration. We captured it on our lenses as well, so it is a matter of investigation if it is an assault, a tussle or a confrontation, it has to be investigated.

“So, we have commenced investigation and written to the Rt. Honourable Speaker of Parliament because he is a sitting member of Parliament, we have identified the police officers who were on duty at the scene, we have taken statements and we will definitely update you in due course,” DCOP Donkor noted.
