The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has begun minimal spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam amid the rainy season.
Stanley Martey disclosed that the water levels of the Dam are currently pegged at 44.4 feet, hence spillage has commenced with only two gates of the Dam opened to allow outflow of excess water.
He said this is being done to prevent the water level of the Dam to rise above 47 feet (the standard level) due to the inflow of water from the Densu river as a result of the rainfall.
“We have already started at 44ft with two gates opened when we announced to the general public,” he stated.
Speaking in an interview with TV3, Thursday, May 22, 2025, Mr. Martey explained that per GWCL’s operating standard, the maximum operating level of the Dam is 48 feet.
However, he emphasised that in order to protect the integrity of the Dam, GWCL takes proactive approach to spill the Dam at the level of 44 feet.
“Rains have set in again and we are seeing very high inflows into the Weija Dam from the Densu river. Our expectation is that we will be spilling more when the inflows are more than the outflows.
“As a company and per our standard operations, we don’t want to go beyond 47 feet. So, at 44 feet we start with minimal spillage.”
Stanley Martey noted that the spillage will increase if there are more inflows and the level of water increases.
“If we are not careful and the Dam is collapsed, the repercussions will be more disastrous than what we have seen in times past,” he stated.
He encouraged residents living in buffer zones to evacuate while urging authorities to take precautionary measures in order to avert serious devastation
