The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has promised active collaboration between the government and the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) to ensure that Ghana’s seawaters remain the safest for all ship owners and operators.

He made this known during a working visit to the Ghana Maritime Authority on Tuesday, 25th February 2025.

Speaking during a media engagement, the Minister said that the Ministry, together with the GMA, will be working to make sure that employment opportunities are explored within the marine sector.

According to him, the marine sector has the potential to employ the youth, which aligns with the President’s vision of creating more employment opportunities for them.

“If there are any opportunities to create job, it is through the marine subsector. Our seafarers would need to take advantage of all handlers, operators, technical and administrative staff. Thank God we have the Regional Maritime University that is here to ensure that we increase allocation to the University to be able to train our youth,” he said.

The MP for Saboba, responding to ways through which the Ministry plans to reduce congestion on the roads, indicated that the Ministry will be working with other sectors on new alternatives to alleviate the situation.

“We are looking at the marine side, inland waters and the road to improve on our transport system. Look at the coast, from Keta right to Axim, if we are able to build sea crafts, transports on the sea and we are able to do some landing sites where those vessels or ships will be fast to convey passengers to their destinations, it will go a long way to ease the congestion on our roads.

We are also looking at the road where we can bring in more buses to help. We believe that with the government policies of partnering with the private sector if we get it done, will solve the congestion,” he assured.

Meanwhile, the Director General for the Ghana Maritime Authority, Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali also emphasized on plans to check congestion at the port.

He said, “In our work in collaborating with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, we will increase efficiency in the aspects of the work that we are supposed to do. GPHA, GMA and Customs and all will handle shipping activities in such a way that shippers can spend a limited time at the port.”

On the employment opportunity, Dr. Ali said his outfit intends to put a drive on crew employment and marine sector employment so that there will be an increase in employment avenue within the marine sector.
