The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has expressed anger at Members of Parliament for allowing themselves to be reduced to nothing, stating they do not want to take responsibility.

The Speaker was reacting to the laying of a paper on the floor of Parliament on the “Road Traffic amendment regulation”.

The LI which was laid by Andrew Agyapa Mercer on behalf of the Transport Minister excludes the Speaker, the Chief Justice and MPs from using sirens on the road.

It would be recalled that in the last meeting of Parliament the LI was introduced but received public backlash. The LI was again brought and laid in the House but MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu was against it, saying they should “guard their privileges and immunities”.

He said it is wrong to exclude the Speaker and MPs among others. Other MPs supported him with MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, urging his colleagues to be bold.

He said ” anything about MPs the public are against it, but they will always go the MPs for support.”

The MPs, including the Second Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu, MP for Asawase, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak and the Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin were all against the LI, with some calling for the LI which had been laid to be withdrawn.

The Speaker in an angry mood urged MPs to “have the guts” for once. He said he would refer the LI to the subsidiary legislation committee and if the committee brings the report to the floor, MPs should be bold and do the right thing.

“Let’s allow the committee to go and look at it, and if it’s not the right thing to do, we’ll annul it.”

He blamed the MPs for not taking responsibility. “You allow yourselves to be reduced to nothingness because you don’t want to take responsibility, I am not.’

He stated. The Speaker also appealed to Ghanaians that the MPs are there to serve them. “We have nothing doing apart from serving them on daily basis.” …that is why the former MPs are poorer than they come in.”

He concluded saying that as a House they need to persuade the people to understand the situation “than to crush them in a head-on collision.”
