A total of 54 persons have died from 354 road accidents in the Western Region in the past six months.

The number is from statistics shared by the Western Region Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Superintendent Isaac Kwesi Sorkpah, for the first half of 2022.

In an interview with Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanabapa morning show, Chief Superintendent Sorkpah indicated that 317 persons were injured in the accidents.

“The accidents included 224 commercial vehicles and 130 private vehicles.

“Out of the total number of deaths, 46 are males and 8 are females. 175 motorbikes were also involved,” he added.

He revealed that most of these accidents are caused by reckless drivers.

“Most of the drivers have refused to listen to the numerous education we continue to provide. Most of them don’t comply with basic road safety regulations and that is why we have these numbers,” he added.

In the meantime, a total of 64 persons died in the same period last year.
