Video: AMA officials decongest Kantamanto market; other areas in Accra

A major decongestion exercise by officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) swept through some major markets in Accra on Tuesday, May 20.

The exercise, led by Mayor of Accra, Michael Allotey saw places like the Kantamanto markets, Tudu, Kinbu Senior High Tech area cleared of congestion to aid easy movement.

Speaking to the media after the exercise on Tuesday, Michael Allotey said the decongestion drive will continue to Adabraka through to Circle and Kaneshie.

He declared that this is not a nine-day wonder exercise as the AMA is committed to improving sanitation on the streets of Accra.

“I don’t give promises I cannot stand. Whatever I say, I do. This exercise is not a nine-day wonder, we are on the streets to make sure the roads are cleared.

“We are not done in the next one hour, we are going back to the streets. From here, we will pass through where we are coming from all the way to Circle and if there’s more strength we continue to Kaneshie, then we continue tomorrow,” he stated.

The AMA had served earlier notice to embark on the decongestion exercise in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly.

This initiative aims to restore order and significantly improve sanitation across the city.

The operation is targeted at key areas surrounding the AMA Head Office, including Kinbu Road stretching to Railways, the zone from ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and the bustling Opera Square extending towards Adabraka.

Speaking to Citi News, AMA Public Relations Officer Gilbert Ankrah confirmed that the exercise will also intensify along vital routes from Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School to Cow Lane, alongside areas around the Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel.

The plan is straightforward, with the main focus on the areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. All zones within that enclave will be addressed,” Mr. Ankrah stated, emphasizing the comprehensive nature of the cleanup.
